01. Risk register

Six problems we find on nearly every Ukrainian used car

These are the failures buyers keep reporting in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv. Each one can be confirmed or cleared during a single on-site inspection.

  1. Rolled-back odometer

Cluster mileage edited to lift the asking price. Pedal, seat and steering wear rarely match the number shown.

Reported via: service station records, owner forums

    High
  2. Repaired collision damage sold as clean

Welded seams, mismatched paint and replaced airbags are presented as a factory body.

Reported via: body shop measurements, paint depth readings

    High
  3. Water damage from a regional flood

Corrosion in connectors and a damp cabin smell appear months after purchase, not on the viewing day.

Reported via: interior trim check, electrical diagnostics

    Medium
  4. Imported car with erased history abroad

Auction damage and prior mileage stay hidden when the foreign registration file is incomplete.

Reported via: VIN decode, import documents

    Medium
  5. The seller is not the registered owner

A relative or reseller signs the deal, and the technical passport details do not match the car.

    Reported via: ownership document review

    High
  6. Faults masked by a warm engine

The car is driven before the viewing so cold-start noise, smoke and warning lights stay out of sight.

Reported via: cold-start procedure, fault code scan

    Medium

Inspection stages

Six stages, one fixed order, every car

A mobile technician follows the same sequence from booking to written report. Each stage closes with a severity tag, so you can tell a deal-breaker from a bargaining point before you pay a deposit.

  1. STAGE-01 / PRE-CHECK

    VIN and document match

We read the VIN from the body, the registration certificate and the official record, then compare odometer readings against service history for gaps or rollback signs.

    Caution
  2. STAGE-02 / BODY

    Panel and paint thickness scan

A calibrated gauge measures coating depth on every panel. Readings above factory range usually mean filler, a repaired seam or a replaced element.

    Caution
  3. STAGE-03 / UNDERSIDE

Lift inspection of frame and suspension

On a lift we check sills, subframe, control arms, shock mounts and fluid leaks. Corrosion on load-bearing metal is the most common reason we advise against a purchase.

    High risk
  4. STAGE-04 / ENGINE

    ECU diagnostics and fault history

We pull stored and pending fault codes, check live sensor values and confirm whether repair readiness is complete or the memory was recently cleared.

    Data
  5. STAGE-05 / ROAD

    Supervised test drive

Gearbox shifts, steering pull, braking and cold-start behaviour only show up under load. You drive, our technician sits alongside and records what happens.

    Caution
  6. STAGE-06 / REPORT

    Written findings the same day

You get a photo set, measured values and an estimated repair cost per finding. Results reflect a limited assessment at the time of service and are not a warranty.

What buyers found before they paid

Three checks booked in Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa. Each one started with a listing that looked clean online.

  1. sedan / 2019 / 118 000 km / Kyiv

Rear frame rail repaired after a collision

Paint depth read two to three times factory value along the right quarter panel, and weld marks were visible under sealant in the boot floor. The seller had described the car as accident-free.

High Buyer walked away. The asking price dropped by 4 300 UAH the same evening, then the listing disappeared.

  2. crossover / 2017 / 164 000 km / Lviv

    Turbocharger on its way out

Oil residue in the intercooler piping and a whistle above 2 000 rpm under load. No fault codes stored, so a short drive was the only way to catch it.

Medium Buyer used the finding to negotiate 18 000 UAH off and budgeted the repair before signing.

  3. hatchback / 2020 / 71 000 km / Odesa

    Clean body, worn front brakes

Panel gaps and paint depth matched across all sides. Front discs measured below the wear limit and the cabin filter had not been changed in a long time.

Low Buyer purchased the car the same day and replaced the discs two weeks later.
